Takashi Yanai

Takashi’s work blends the ethos of California Modernism with reinterpretations of traditional Japanese architecture. “Before this strange time we found ourselves in, I spent a lot of time outside of the studio whether it was visiting job sites, meeting new clients or traveling to our projects in places like Japan, or back and forth from LA and SF. So, working at home was quite an adjustment. The technology makes meetings easy but just being in one place took a little time to get used to. The silver lining has been being able to spend more time with the kids and with the house and garden. It’s given me the chance to reflect on what makes a home a home and has been a test of some central ideas in our work such as open flexible spaces and connecting interiors to landscape and views.”
